I would like to give my most heartfelt thanks to the countless students at the Art
Institute of New York City and Pratt Institute who assisted me by engaging in spir-
ited debates about the nature of contemporary street style and who weighed in on
the nuances of identification with contemporary style groups and subcultures. Your
thoughtfulness and introspection have contributed to the richness and depth of this
