I dedicate this book to the memory of my mother, Alberta, whose hard
work and determination encouraged me to become the woman I am
today. She taught me to strive to reach greater heights in life, to remember
the roads that I have traveled and the bridges I have crossed, and to reach
out, touch, and help someone along the way.
Special thanks to Dr. Philip Agop Philip, who was my guide through
breast cancer when I did not know which direction to go and how this
disease would impact my life. I am forever grateful to God for placing
Dr. Philip in my life as my oncologist and assisting me with this survival
guide for all black women to have the knowledge and understanding
about breast cancer, treatment, and life with and after breast cancer.
Thank you to Dr. Donald Weaver, who has been with me from the very
start of my journey with breast cancer. It was Dr. Weaver who advised me,
when I was rst diagnosed, to do all that I can medically and to let God
do the rest. I believe it was God who placed Dr. Weaver in my life to per-
form the many successful surgeries I have had over the years, and for that
I am truly grateful.
Thank you to Dr. Washington, who was my amazing radiation oncolo-
gist. It was Dr. Washington who educated me on the process and impor-
tance of chemotherapy. She encouraged me while addressing many of my
fears and concerns about how this therapy would impact one’s body. As a
result of her compassion and extensive knowledge, I ended up choosing
life over losing my hair, which grew back even healthier than before.
Finally, thanks to my daughter Erika and my son Clay for all of their
love, assistance, and encouragement to share my knowledge of breast can-
cer and experiences with other women.
