PART 1
Dealing with the Basics
for Black Women
Part One is made up of three separate chapters covering some of the
basics you need to know about breast cancer. In Chapter One, I explain
why black women especially need to know about and pay attention to
breast cancer. Chapter Two covers the common emotions that women feel
when they receive a breast cancer diagnosis and discusses talking to your
signifi cant other (husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, wife) about your cancer
diagnosis, which is a very diffi cult and painful step for many women. It is
so painful that some of them forego telling others at all, robbing them-
selves of the comfort and care of the people who love them. Chapter Three
describes the different types of breast cancer, which is important infor-
mation you need to know.
