Erin would like to thank the many students in her ANTH 315 “Gender Sex and the
Body” course over the last five years for all their enthusiasm and insights into ways
of thinking about beauty, embodiment, and the roles these things continue to
play in our lives. She would also like to thank her co-author, Elizabeth Gackstetter
Nichols, for her generosity and practical approach to collaborative writing. Erin
is extremely grateful for the friendship of the original group of “Rose’s Writers” at
Drury University from spring of 2015. The enduring friendship of Laura Burghart,
the world’s most beautiful cake maker and truth speaker, has enabled Erin to
believe that she could do an amazing number of difficult things. Finally, she would
like to thank Kiera, for always being a star: she’s clever and patient and funny and
everything Erin ever wanted in a daughter.
Elizabeth is first truly grateful to the brilliant and hilarious Erin Kenny. She’d
also like to thank her CORE 201 “What Is Beauty” students for their willingness to
think about and explore social norms of beauty and for introducing her to such
gems as totalfratmove.com. Elizabeth is also very grateful to her Kira for the win
dows into cosplay and costuming, and for teaching her about crossplay, gender-
bending, and nonstandard beauty uses of sharpies. Elizabeth is grateful to Maria
for reading every page of Vogue together; Rose’s Writing group for tacos, tea time,
and editing advice; Springfield Cosplay Group for inspiration and support; and her
parents for their unflagging enthusiasm. Finally, Brad, thank you for being moral
and tech support, for putting up with wigs in the bathroom, and for carrying all
our stuff.
