xiv Series Foreword in which these have affected people in their daily lives, rather than viewing them through the lenses of the healers or their profession. Our hope is that these volumes constitute a small and very useful library of the history of health and medicine. As editor, I have endeavored to bring on board authors who are med- ical historians as well as fine teachers who have the ability to transmit their knowledge in writing with the same enthusiasm they bring into the classroom. As an author, I am sharing the discoveries, the joys, and not least the challenges and frustrations that all of us encounter in producing this series. Joseph P.
