Acknowledgments I would like to thank Maxine Taylor, editor at ABC-CLIO, for her support and encouragement while I was working on this book. I would also like to thank Dr. Katherine Helm for recommending me to Maxine as a potential author. I appreciate her confidence in my ability to complete the book. I would like to thank my students, especially Allison Trendle, who provided daily inspiration and ideas as I was writing the book. If I had trouble writing a section, I just imagined myself teaching my students, and then I could find the words. Allison was an enormous help to me during the writing of the book, taking on the writing of the Directory of Resources and the Glossary and giv- ing me insight and encouragement for the case study at the beginning of the book. I would like to thank my daughter, Julia Barich, for her ongoing support, not only for the book but also for all the projects I take on. She never doubts that I will be able to accomplish something once I set my mind to it. Hopefully I show her the same unwavering support in her endeavors.
