Acknowledgments The completion of this project brings with it the need to thank a host of people who contributed in very diverse and necessary ways to the final project. First and foremost, I need to thank James Willbanks, who actively encouraged me to pursue this project, despite the fact that I was assuming a new position in the Department of Military History at the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College. I truly appreciate your leadership, wisdom, friendship, and mentoring, even though you left us to go to Texas. Within the same vein, I have had the great fortune to work under Thomas Hanson and Dave Cotter as they both assumed leadership roles in DMH. Your leadership has been inspiring and your support unwavering. Thank you for continuing to fight the good fight. In addition to having the support of great bosses, I have the rare benefit of being part of a truly outstanding faculty. The professors in the DMH are first-rate colleagues who make work a genuinely fantastic place. I am truly honored to toil away with an inspiring group of professional histor- ians. Beyond my colleagues at CGSC, I also must thank my many students over the years, who have graciously accepted a civilian academic into their unique world and culture. I am truly humbled to have the privilege to teach you military history, knowing that some of you will inevitably make history. The process of writing a book also entails a long list of supporting efforts conducted by a whole host of professionals. Padraic (Pat) Carlin at ABC-CLIO, who stayed committed to the project, even when it fell behind schedule—thank you for staying the course I truly appreciate it.
