Latinos account for over 25 percent of the U.S. population under the
age of one. Less than 50 percent of the population younger than age
one is non-Hispanic white, with almost 5 percent Asian American and
14 percent African American.
2016 Senators Ted Cruz (Texas) and Marco Rubio (Florida), both children of
Cuban immigrants, run for the Republican presidential nomination.
A record 27 million Latinos are eligible to vote (12 percent of all eligi-
ble voters), a rise of 4 million since 2012.
Donald Trump is elected president of the United States. The phrase
“Build the Wall,” referring to Trump’s campaign promise to build a
wall between the United States and Mexico, is one of Trump’s signa-
ture platforms during the campaign.
Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada is elected to the U.S. Senate, becom-
ing the nation’s first Latina senator.
