Adding Value 5 The value of the logic model is that it encourages people to imagine a future that the cultural organization can influence. And the way organizations go about their imagin- ing really influences the effectiveness of their organization. It is important to take the time to imagine what success will look like in the lives of the cultural organization’s cus- tomers. Figure 1-2 illustrates the steps in the process to move from a product or feature to understanding the benefits and value from the customer’s perspective. The future success of libraries will be measured by the variety of business models that they are able to devise and implement. Brian Mathews 4 Business Model An organizational value model, oftentimes called a business model, describes the basis of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures economic, social, and/or other forms of value. 5 The whole idea is to break the activities of a “business” down into a manageable number of building blocks. This process of using building blocks al- lows you to clearly see how all the pieces of an organization fit together. The use of the business model should also help clarify and reveal how value is created and delivered to the customer.
