times contradictory role of technology in social relationships is examined
by two researchers.
Though most people spend much of their free time with family, friends,
neighbors, and colleagues, this is rarely looked at in detail. We seek to
change that through the thorough examinations of social relationships
we provide in the three sections of this book.
As a recent U.S. Census Bureau survey showed, when it comes to leisure
time, other than watching TV, we spend more time socializing on an aver-
age day than anything else, we believe what follows presents a better
understanding of socializing and how it influences our everyday lives.
