xx Introduction but it must be remembered that it is an accusation easily to be made and hard to be proved, and harder to be defended by the party accused, tho never so innocent” (Hale 1736, 635). This idea still seems pervasive though it is a rape myth. In fact, studies indicate that false reports happen only between 2 and 10 percent of the time (National Sexual Violence Resource Center 2012, 2–3). In 2004, in the introduction to my Encyclopedia of Rape, I wrote that “depic- tions and coverage of rape permeate U.S. culture. Some people will say that it is too much . . . the idea of an Encyclopedia of Rape is controversial, if not unnec- essary. I would argue otherwise. It is all the more necessary” (Smith 2004, xi). I still believe this. With the proliferation of “fake news,” it seems even more important to educate people about rape and to give them facts, instead of myths. In 2017, too many survivors remain afraid to come forward, fearing they will not be believed or that they will be harmed in retaliation for revealing an attack. Too many people across the world believe it is acceptable to force others to have sex. Perhaps some minds will be changed, as well as informed, by reading the entries in this volume. My hope is that some people will also be energized to fight against sexual violence.
