Writing a book is always a journey, along which an author accumulates numerous debts to colleagues, friends, and family. I wish to acknowledge some of those many dues here. The entire team at ABC-CLIO and Praeger provided remarkable support. Our collaboration began in 2010 when they awarded me an ABC-CLIO/Society for Military History research grant for Every Citizen a Soldier, which was my first national research grant of 14 that I have received to date. The funding afforded financial backing and furnished sustaining encouragement at an early and formative junc- ture of my academic career. Padraic (Pat) Carlin skillfully administered the grant and became a gracious advocate and dear friend. He and Steve Catalano, my initial editor at Praeger, originally suggested this work Pat and Steve were tireless champions of my research and writing, providing inspiration, aid, and assistance throughout the whole process. I feel for- tunate to count them both as colleagues. Anthony Chiffolo and Kevin J. Downing approved the project, and Elana Palace provided skillful edito- rial suggestions. At Angelo State University, President Brian J. May joined Donald R. Topliff, provost and vice president for academic affairs Susan E. Keith, dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research Carolyn Gascoigne, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and Tony R. Mullis, chair of the Department of Security Studies and Criminal Justice, in leading our university through significant growth toward great heights. They have always ensured that the university is, and remains, a great place to work. Angelo State University awarded me a Faculty Research Enhancement Program grant that contributed to this volume and funded research at Acknowledgments
