BCE 1563 Spaniards make wine in Florida from wild grapes. 1587R oanoke colony brews the first beer in an English colony in North America. 1619 First dramshop laws are passed in the English colonies. Jamestown enacts laws against drunkenness. 1620 Puritans carry more beer than water on the Mayflower on their trip across the Atlantic. 1623 First grapes for wine production are planted in English colonies. 1629 John Smith notes that Puritans are making alcoholic beverages. 1630s First “ordinaries” open in the English colonies in North America. 1634 First known tavern license in Boston is issued to Samuel Cole. 1784 Doctor Benjamin Rush argues that excessive alcohol consumption is a problem in the United States. 1791 Congress passes the Distilled Spirits Tax. 1829 David Yuengling, a German immigrant, establishes the Eagle Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Yuengling claims to be the oldest brewery in the United States. 1840 John Wagner, an immigrant from Bavaria, brings lager yeast and is credited with brewing the first lager beer in the United States.
