Acknowl­edgments A proj­ect of this size and scope cannot come to successful completion without the contributions of many ­people, including the ABC-­CLIO team: Kevin Hillstrom, Patrick Hall, Barbara Patterson, and Erin Ryan. I would like to thank each of the contributors—­ authors of the essays and case studies—­for their dedication to the proj­ect, their many insights and thoughtful reflections throughout the writing and revision pro­ cess, and their willingness to add their voices to this impor­tant and unfolding public conversation. I offer my sincere thanks to Rachel Woods for her preliminary research at the start of the proj­ ect and her sharp eye through its final stages, and to Carla Severe, Shady Patterson, Laura Jones, Dionne Clark, Mack Curry IV, and Brittny Byrom for their research insights.
