Acknowledgments This work is a product of a pleasant “accident.” In 2011, I was in Leiden, the Netherlands, when I got a call from Professor Toyin Falola, asking whether I would like to join his two-person team to write a book on the culture and customs of Libya. I obliged, as I had just gotten a fellowship at the Institute of Advanced Study, New Europe College, in Bucharest, Romania. I reckoned that a project of that nature would occupy my time in a new land about which I knew nothing. Perhaps Kaitlin Ciarmiello of ABC-CLIO was convinced of my ability based on the 2011 project that, in 2016, she approached me to undertake the writing of this book. As writers and authors will affirm, writing is like pregnancy. While delivery is usually expected in nine months, it could occur either early or late. Even after I failed to complete the first draft at the agreed date, not only did Kaitlin, Erin, and the editors keep their faith in me, they also continued to encourage me until the project was completed.
