Acknowledgments Just as child abuse work requires a multidisciplinary team, writing this book required a multidisciplinary team. First and foremost, I must thank Debbie Carvalko, my editor at Praeger. I spoke with many editors and agents about this book over the last few years. Almost without exception, I was told that no one would want to read a book about child abuse. Deb- bie was the exception. After I submitted my proposal to her, she quickly wrote back that Prae- ger wanted to publish the book, not as a child abuse pediatrician’s mem- oir as I had originally envisioned it, but as a compendium of the voices of many child abuse pediatricians. Her vision opened an intriguing door for me to explore the personal and professional stories of many of my col- leagues, stories that would otherwise never have been told. Debbie has, as any good editor, challenged and supported me along the way. Her advice has made this book so much better than it would have been otherwise. I must thank the 30 child abuse pediatricians listed in the appendix who allowed me to interview them. They generously gave their time and their hearts. I hope the reader appreciates their stories as much as I have. In particular, I have to thank Dr. Robert Reece who not only encouraged me in the writing of this book but who has been a steadfast mentor throughout my career. Dr. David Kerns also helped me with his sage advice. I am also appreciative of the assistance the library staff at Maine Medical Center provided me in my almost daily request for articles, some obscure and hard to fi nd. I must also express my appreciation for Doctor David Chadwick’s series of child abuse doctor biographies in his book, The Child Abuse Doctors published by STM Learning. This book is about pediatricians who specialize in the care of abused children. But pediatricians are not the only ones who help abused chil- dren. Other professions help these children as well.
