ab Chronology Date Key Events in American History Key Events in Nella Larsen’s Life 1788 The U.S. Constitution is ratified including some references to slavery, in particular the infamous “three- fifths” clause designating enslaved persons as three-fifths of a person for the purposes of congressional representation and taxation. 1803 The Louisiana Purchase, through which the United States nearly doubled in size and because of which questions of the expansion of slavery arose. 1807 The slave trade is rendered illegal by the United States and Great Britain. 1820 The Missouri Compromise permits the admission of Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, retaining the balance between slave and free states and using the Mason-Dixon Line as the future boundary between slave and free regions of the United States.
