Preface xi Except in chapter 1, where we spell out how psychology can help com- munication, we inject our psychological observations mainly through sidebars, endnotes, and occasional paragraphs about the importance of personality differences. We present a series of “Getting to Know You” panels in which we flesh out how our four primary personality types are likely to approach some of the legal and financial issues we raise. We never intended to write a textbook. We know there’s more to every one of these topics than we talk about. Rather than cover everything under the sun, we chose to talk about the topics that our clients have told us trouble them most. We’ve attached quite a few notes to guide people to books and articles that support, expand on, and even challenge what we write, and a lengthy further reading list for similar purposes. We leave more complete coverage to our scholarly colleagues. Finally, we certainly don’t suggest that this book can substitute for individual professional advice. On the contrary, we hope it will prepare people for thoughtful conversations not only among friends and family members but also with their professional advisors. Think of it as a primer on peace of mind.
