As always, my husband, Craig Zicari, offered invaluable counsel
and support from beginning to end of this project, and my daughter,
Sarah Perlet, was a constant source of encouragement and inspiration.
Through our lengthy collaborative research and writing process,
I learned an enormous amount from my coauthor, Judy Feuerherm.
I came to better appreciate the importance of understanding a profes-
sional life within the context of the personal. Judy’s ability to see the
big picture, to recognize trends, and to design a solidly grounded
research methodology allowed us to develop our initial questions into
a multiyear, multitiered project.
A final word of appreciation to the Central Library of Rochester &
Monroe County, a valuable resource in our community and a welcom-
ing place for a writer.
FROM JUDY FEUERHERM
