This book is dedicated to the old timers at the Grand Rapids Police Department, Grand Rapids, Michigan, who taught me how to be the real police. My first training officers were White males, Jim Dingman and Dave Stephan who started their careers in 1958, when I was two years old. I started my career, when I was 22 years old with a degree in psychology. Dingman and Stephan had degrees in people and under- stood human nature, better than any psychologist. It was never about race it was about people and their needs. Finally, I dedicate this book to the minority communities, my community, and those who have endured years of mistreatment by police. My hope is that both can find a common ground, stop the rhetoric, and learn to work together.
