Terminology and Abbreviations In the writing of this book, we noted that there are many versions of the spelling for well-known terrorist groups. To reduce the chaos, we de- cided to use the United Nations spelling of Da’esh in place of Daesh, Is- lamic State, ISIS, ISIL, and IS, and we used the United Nations spelling of Al-Qaida for al Qaida, Al Qaeda, and al-Qaeda throughout the book. All others are as noted next.
