Preface The inscription below sits etched in the Wall of Healing at the Columbine Memorial, located adjacent to the school in Clement Park. Of all the quotes featured in the Wall, it is these words that form the foundation for this book. Given that mass violence, both in and out of schools, continues to be a topic of concern in the public discourse even 20 years after the Columbine shoot- ing, such a question is of particular importance, especially because, in order to prevent further attacks from occurring, we have to learn from past errors that allowed events like Columbine to happen.
