CHAPTER ONE April 20, 1999 It seemed like any other day for Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. This community of 500,000 residents, nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains southwest of Denver, appeared an ideal place to raise a family, with its close community ties and lots of opportunities, including good schools. That spring day, as people awoke and went about their morn- ing routines, more than 1,900 teenagers in the community headed to Colum- bine High School, an impressive building of 250,000 square feet located on Pierce Street just south of Bowles Avenue.
