Rising from Adversity 13 overamplified. His continued reinforcement of this strength turned it into a superpower that had unintended consequences. No leader intentionally overuses strengths and creates negative percep- tions. No leader wants to be the person who is unfriendly or paranoid or who leaves casualties. Becoming a better leader requires gaining insight into who you really are. It requires change at the core of your beliefs. It requires challenging your go-to behaviors when things get tough. It requires toning down what you consider to be your best traits and abilities. There are three steps to becoming an insightful leader: 1. Find your superpower. 2. Identify your adversity. 3. Challenge your beliefs. Part II of this book will help you find your amazing superpower and the unintended consequences it can create. You will recognize its gifts and where it might cause you to be perceived as egotistical or manipulative. You’ll get recommendations to start using right away to bring your strengths back into balance. Part III will help you identify the adversity that developed your super- powers. It will explain why certain individuals or circumstances trigger your overuse and how that results in you acting in a less-than-construc- tive manner. Part III will also challenge those deeply held survival beliefs that fuel your superpower overuse. You’ll be able to acknowledge these beliefs for helping you to overcome your adversity and then replace them with beliefs that better fit your current experiences. This will lead to last- ing change and allow you to become the leader you know you are capable of being. Your brain may already be exploring what strengths you received and their possible negative outcomes if overused. However, before you jump into step one of discovering your superpowers, you’ll need to turn off that natural defensive chatter in your mind so that you can fully challenge your thinking. This will also help you step aside from your point of view and see things clearly from other people’s perspective.
