Acknowledgments I must first acknowledge ABC-CLIO’s history and religion editor, George Butler. I have not met him in the flesh, but we have a friendly and produc- tive relationship via email. It was a happy day when he invited me to write this volume in an email dated Wednesday, August 16, 2017. He sent the invitation right as I was heading to Florence, Italy, to live for the academic year. I said yes, thinking I could do some writing while abroad. Alas, I was wrong. But as soon as I got back stateside, I hit it hard. I hope he is proud of this work being added to his innovative list in the Facts and Fictions series. George, I look forward to working with you again. I extend a sincere thanks to another editor at ABC-CLIO, Robin Tutt. She is the kind of person I love to write for. She’s quick with turnarounds, sharp, and ever the polite and friendly one in her communications. Along with my colleagues and students at Pepperdine, we have come through a turbulent year with destructive fires, a mass shooting, and new leadership at our university. It looks like things are returning to normal, but our hearts are heavy due to the lives lost and the homes destroyed. My hope is that our recently elected president, Jim Gash, will enjoy enthu- siastic support from our wonderful community here near the beaches of Malibu as we head into a new and exciting era. When times get tough, let us simply look out the window and be grateful for the place we are privileged to call home.
