A.D. 500 Signifi cant human populations established through- out Chile. 600–1000 Infl uence of the Tiahuanaco culture on northern Chil- ean peoples. 1470–1535 Inca conquest of communities north of the Río Maule. Imposition of labor tribute, including gold mining. 1520 Ferdinand Magellan explores the strait that now bears his name. 1535–1536 Diego de Almagro explores Chile but establishes no settlements. 1541 Pedro de Valdivia leads an expedition to Chile and founds Santiago, February 12, 1541. Mapuche attack in September destroys the community, but Valdivia has it rebuilt. 1543 La Serena, the fi rst town in the Norte Chico, is founded.
