Leadership for the Fourth Industrial Revolution 11 Toward a Smart, Connected Model of Leadership In the following chapters, I will provide you with a new leadership model, development strategies, and practical tools designed to help you lead others through fourth industrial revolution challenges. This new leadership model is future-focused and grounded in cutting-edge research and observable tech- nological and social mega trends. What this means is that the smart, con- nected model has been developed using the best science and data available today to support you in building a future-ready organization. Today’s data allow us to predict tomorrow’s leadership challenges. As the case studies covered in each chapter illustrate, 4IR leadership challenges already exist, but they are not insurmountable. They do, however, require lead- ers like you to view the science and art of leading with a different mindset. To do this, you will need a new leadership framework and set of strategies to put into action. To help you develop a new leadership strategy and practice, I will use a structure for each of the remaining five chapters in this book. First, I simple will introduce a client case study to define the theme of each chapter. Next, I present concepts and data to deepen your knowledge base and understand- ing of each new 4IR leadership demand. In the second half of each chapter, I outline a set of tools and techniques to help you deepen your repertoire of leadership strategies. Each chapter pro- vides guidance on how to use these tools and techniques to become a smarter, more connected leader. These tools, frameworks, and powerful questions are intended to foster self-reflection, leader-to-leader dialogue, and, most impor- tantly, to help you take action to start future-proofing your organization or institution. Finally, each chapter includes a chapter summary with recommended actions and tips for managing your accountability. In total, this book contains more than 25 development tools and 20 recommendations for action that you can put into practice today. If I were to teach your leaders how to use all of the tools in this book in person, it would take a week just to learn them. As we all know, time is money. So, I believe that there is tremendous value in the book that you’re holding in your hands. These tools have taken me nearly 20 years to develop and refine, with more than 50,000 hours of research, prac- tical experience, and advising thousands of clients on becoming better lead- ers and leading change in their organizations. In each section of this book, I will help you “aim” these development tools at one of the requirements of future-ready leadership. These include: Presence Agility Collaboration
