1 ppp THE VOLUNTEERS No two teens are the same. You know that. Just as no two teens need the exact same book recommendations, no two teens have the same needs when it comes to volunteer opportunities. Some need volunteer hours for school or religious education, while others just have time on their hands or want to help out of the kindness of their hearts. Some have all the time in the world, while others can only fit a couple of hours into their already fully booked calendars. Just as we wouldn’t have only one genre of book on our shelves, it is important that we differentiate the volunteer oppor- tunities that we provide for teens. We also need to remember that teens experience a lot from one day to the next, and it is important that we understand that a volunteer project that they are eager and willing to do one day might not fit where their mind is the next. Offering differenti- ated volunteer opportunities will help us to serve the most teens most efficiently. In this chapter we will primarily discuss the volunteers themselves. In future chapters we will discuss specific types of volunteering to fit with our individual volunteers. Who are these teens? Where can we find them? Are we thinking beyond the same volunteers that we have been serving for years? Can we expand to serve more of our population, and are we keeping all types of teens in mind?
