Chronology 1776 Abigail Adams admonishes her husband to “not forget the ladies” when creating the United States. 1777 All states pass laws that take away women’s right to vote. 1792 A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, written by Mary Woll- stonecraft, is published in the United Kingdom and appears in the United States shortly thereafter. 1839 Mississippi grants women the right to hold property in their own names if their husbands give permission. 1848 Seneca Falls Convention is held in New York. 1849 Harriet Tubman makes her first escape from slavery. She will eventually return to the South thirteen times, leading others to freedom. 1849 Elizabeth Blackwell becomes the first woman to graduate from medical school and become a doctor in the United States. 1851 Sojourner Truth delivers her famous “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech in Ohio. 1855 In the case Missouri v. Celia, a Slave, a Black woman is not allowed to defend herself against a master’s act of rape because she is his property. 1861 Clara Barton begins nursing Union soldiers fallen in battle in the Civil War. She will eventually found the Red Cross.
