xiii Acknowledgments I want to acknowledge all those courageous health care providers who chose to reduce the suffering of their transgender patients rather than yield to the overwhelming cultural pressure to reject them as being unwor- thy. I hope that the providers of today and of the future will continue this tradition. I want to acknowledge a provider that I consulted with early in the writ- ing of this book. He told me to be sure to tell other providers how to deal with transgender patients who had chief complaints of nontransgender ail- ments, for example, broken arms and grieving from the loss of a loved one. Such chief complaints undoubtedly represent the most frequent encoun- ters that providers have with transgender people. They are chances for pro- viders to show their professionalism and for patients to appreciate those providers who do. I want to thank my daughters, both in the health professions, for their patience and understanding.
