CHAPTER ONE Thesis Research 101: Cultivating Relationships with Gradu­ate Student Scholars beyond Course-­Based Instruction Steve Brantley, Ellen K. Corrigan, and Kirstin I. Duffin Introduction Academic librarians at many institutions work to promote information liter- acy through partnerships with the teaching faculty, discussing with faculty the importance and need for gradu­ate students to be exposed to ideas sur- rounding researching the lit­ er ­ a­ture, organ­izing their sources, and presenting their scholarship in the online environment. Sometimes gradu­ate students ­will recognize where their knowledge falls short and seek assistance from their university. This is what occurred at Eastern Illinois University (EIU), the authors’ institution. Gradu­ate students of the Gradu­ate Student Advisory Council (GSAC) reached out to librarians to advance their awareness of the scholarly landscape. ­ These students ­were seeking guidance in learning how
