The Venn diagram displayed in this introduction illustrates how programming, promotion, and partnerships can take place separately, but the shaded portions of the dia- gram are intended to show that when these concepts coalesce, programs are more effective and lead to best practices. The center convergence in the dia- gram illustrates the goal that I hope this book encourages, which is that programs about African American writers are offered throughout whole communities and are optimally promoted and organized through collabora- tive partnerships.
