CHAPTER ONE Be the Change You Wish to See “When you give a ­ ripple power and direction, it becomes a river.” —­Jennifer Kahnweiler, in Mariam Pera, “Championing Introverts” We are ideally situated to emulate the change we wish to see and spread that change throughout our school community. The ­Future Ready Schools initiative continues to influence school leadership so that school leaders are focused on implementing digital learning strategies to positively affect student engagement and retention. However, school administrators can- not create ­ Future Ready Schools alone. This is where school librarians are essential. School librarians work with all stakeholders within the com- munity: students, parents, faculty, and office staff. Few ­others, outside of administrators, can make this claim. School librarians should leverage ­ these connections to establish themselves as the driving innovators within their school. If you close your eyes and picture your professional role model, whom do you see? What superstar school librarians do you admire? Who has been a pioneer within their school community that you wish to emulate? When you mea­sure your path to innovation against whomever you envi- sion, ­ there is no doubt that your journey ­ will look dif­fer­ent from theirs. However, the result of creating an incubation hub within the library for exploration and experimentation is within reach. Where do you start?
