This painting, and ­others on other vases, clearly depicts the corpse’s phallus, which may be simply anatomical, but also may depict a common physical reaction to violent death. 2 3 Phase One. The ship of the sea ­peoples is ­ under attack by Egyptian archers. The crew members, whose armament consists of swords and spears, have ­little chance to respond. The ­ enemy soldiers are distinguished by their “feathered” helmets and the ­enemy ship by the bird-­ (duck-) headed prows. 13
