Chapter 1 The School Librarian and Social Studies Teachers with Civics This chapter covers the topics of civics or civic principles as stated in the Social Studies Standards and how to become a responsible and an effective citi- zen. It also covers library literacy standards and language arts standards. The teacher librarians partner with the elementary social studies teachers to provide excellence in education with engaging lessons, with library and online resources as students collaborate with each other in order to create learning for all. Lessons are approximately twenty minutes long. If not using some of those standards, the educator will apply other standards. Likewise, the educator can pick and choose any of the three sets of standards or use all of those standards in each lesson. The mixture of social studies, language arts/literacy, and library or literacy skills and resources provides well-rounded opportunities for successful learning. This chapter begins with lessons for kindergarten, with those lessons being usable for other lower elementary grades, and then the lessons move upward to the fifth grade. Grade levels are not narrowly assigned per lesson but are suggested. Furthermore, this book not only engages all learners but also offers lessons that can be intermingled for other elementary grades. There are many resources that have been tested before being suggested with each lesson, offer- ing more teaching opportunities. However, the main focus is student-engaged learning—educators teaching through helpful plans and resources, all based on standards. 1
