A Personal Note If we do not change the future, we shall be compelled to endure it. —Alvin Toffler Every book should start with the author telling why he or she wrote the book. I have always hoped that most people would lead a good and fulfilling life. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Many people grow up with dis- advantages, often based upon income, education, race, or gender. They have to work hard at an early age and never have the opportunity to get a good education or skills to earn a good living. I have always wondered what concerned citizens who cared about others could do to help people fulfill their dreams and potential. As a trained economist, marketing specialist, and citizen activist, I wanted to write a book that would help citizen activists make the world a better place for more people. I believe that the problems of the world— poverty, hunger, drugs, poor education, and poor health—are partly eco- nomic. In 2015, I published Confronting Capitalism, wherein I identified fourteen current problems in American capitalism and discussed the best proposals for fixing each problem. I did not recommend abandoning capi- talism but fixing American capitalism. In 2018, I published Democracy in Decline to point out that our elected representatives are not solving our problems. Their attention is riveted on getting elected and reelected. This requires money and donors. Political candidates are spending more time raising money and satisfying their donors.
