PART I Getting Our Boots on the Ground: The Dirty Work of Patron Privacy The invasions of privacy that are most likely to work their way onto the radar of library patrons are relatively “small” things: what do I do with this flash drive I found? Is a check-out system that requires me to use a card with my name on it really private? Can I take pictures of interesting things I see in the library? What do I do when I see two people arguing in a hallway? These are not massive technological challenges they may be duties that are frequently consigned to nonprofessional library staff. Yet these challenges are incredibly important to the way in which the service quality of your library is perceived. They are concerns that deserve to be directly addressed in every library’s policy.
