Preface xv How to Use This Book This book includes two major sections: (1) Thematic essays discuss the geology, his- tory, first people, and other topics associated with Grand Canyon, and (2) Topical entries describe more than 160 people, places, events, and other aspects of Grand Canyon. An appendix provides additional information about geology, and a glos- sary helps with unfamiliar terms. Throughout this book, you’ll read about many people, places, stories, and issues associated with Grand Canyon, as well as the scientific, religious, and social con- texts of a variety of Grand Canyon–related events. Many of these topics are inter- related for example, John Wesley Powell—who led the first intentional expedition through Grand Canyon—is a towering figure whose name is common on the rims and river in Grand Canyon. Similarly, Theodore Roo se velt is associated with events ranging from the early federal protection of Grand Canyon to personal favors he granted several Grand Canyon pioneers. Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter designed sev- eral of Grand Canyon’s iconic buildings, and mysteries such as the disappearance of honeymooning couple Glen and Bessie Hyde persist. Although some of these stories are well-known, many entries describe lesser known events, including the integration of Grand Canyon into American culture. Along the way, readers will get glimpses of a diverse group of people who have influenced Grand Canyon, ranging from courageous heroes to shameless profiteers. Linkages of these people, places, and stories are listed as “See also” at the end of most entries. We have also included an extensive index to direct readers to other mentions of various people and places. Together, these people, places, and stories explain how we’ve viewed and imagined Grand Canyon and why it matters to do so. We hope you enjoy learning about Grand Canyon.
