first we must weigh it. The fact that a piece of information violates an evi-
dentiary rule of exclusion will cause us to give it less weight, but if it has
sufficient indicia of reliability, we will take it into account. We must
investigate the court records, such as they are, and see what we can learn
from them. We will look at collateral evidence that can give us a context
for evaluating the more direct evidence. We will do our best to get to the
bottom of things and determine what probably happened. Let us now
begin our quest. We will start by looking at three very different stories
that have been told about the trial. By the end of the book, we should
be able to tell which, if any, of those stories is probably true.
