Preface xxi legislative histories, and navigating documents from the three branches of the U.S. government. An entire chapter is now devoted to Web-scale discov- ery tools. These have been ubiquitous in medium-to-large academic librar- ies and have features that need to be explained. Since the fourth edition, there have been many changes to the library information industry as well as to databases themselves. The newly formed Clarivate Analytics has acquired Web of Science and the EndNote bibliographic formatting software from Thomson Reuters. EBSCO and ProQuest have both been building up their e-book holdings, with EBSCO acquiring Gobi (formerly YBP Library Services) and ProQuest acquiring Coutts Information Services. Vendors have been adding to primary-source offerings. Gale’s Early Arabic Printed Books is a prime example of this. Incor- poration of social media into data analytics and search results themselves can be seen with integration of alternative metrics into some databases and a new database, voxgov, built largely around federal government social media mentions. For faculty using the book in library and information science classrooms, chapters contain both examples of how to search databases as well as examples that can be assigned as homework in classes. I have used variations of these examples in my classroom teaching over the years, and hopefully others teaching database searching will find them useful as well. The work is also designed for library practitioners: professionals, para- professionals, and anyone providing reference services in libraries. But it will also be of use to researchers independently pursuing studies who desire a more in-depth view of today’s database technologies and how discovery can best be accomplished.
