xiv Introduction 5. Access to health care and well-being (including barriers that prevent women from securing health resources and trailblazing efforts to secure and ensure access for women) 6. Additional informational resources and bibliography Following chapter 8, there are two appendices consisting of data tables of health statistics for country and regional comparisons. ORIENTATION TO THE VOLUME Each author wrote her chapter between 2017 and 2019, endeavoring to provide a snapshot of social and historical factors. During the time period of writing, significant changes in global leadership were afoot: wealthy, powerful countries trended in electing nationalistic leaders who were less supportive of global cooperation political responses varied around increasing scientific evidence of climate change human rights abuses, mass shootings, and devastating conflicts continued their toll on humanity and an international rise in activist movements, such as the #MeToo movement to end sexual violence and the #BlackLivesMatter movement against violence and systemic racism of black people. These cultural changes had some influence on the authors as they determined what and how to write about women’s health around the world (e.g., many of the chapters note statistics of violence against women and impacts on health). In order to narrow and standardize themes, each chapter is organized by an overview of the region, health conditions, and outcomes with a focus on three to four countries within the region, an examination of women’s health equity, and sidebars that celebrate efforts and trailblazers. Each author’s research was guided by a set of definitions, frameworks, and tools. These provided the foundation for examining the complexities of global women’s health. DEFINITIONS, FRAMEWORKS, AND TOOLS FOR THE VOLUME The frameworks, or approaches, that our authors incorporated in researching their chapters are outlined here. These will help readers to think critically about the aforementioned statistics and to center women in discussions of global health.
