talking to computers. Others already spend most of their time text- ing and may not want to switch modes. And most important is pri- vacy. People don’t want to discuss health issues out loud while riding the train to work. It can be a real privacy violation for a voice assistant to read your prescription information out loud or remind you to take a medication in situations where others can hear. So even though voice is not best for every situation, when it makes sense, it’s extremely useful. One of the greatest benefits of voice computing is that it removes barriers for people with visual impair- ments or physical disabilities. We’ll look at several examples of this in upcoming chapters. As this area matures, we’ll likely see combi- nation interfaces, making the best use of voice commands together with typing, touch, and visual displays, in ways that are most appropriate for the situation. 16 Siri, Alexa, and Other Digital Assistants
