Chapter notes have two principal functions. First, they identify the sources of quotations and of references to archival materials. Second, for those who wish to probe more deeply, the notes name some works of more recent scholarship in English related to the specific theme. The Resources and Bibliography section lists addi- tional books and digital resources. For sources cited several times, we have used short forms in the chapter notes. The full citations for those materials are here.
