A Tale of Two Cities 5 model was restricted to black respondents and the third model included only white respondents. We controlled for several social and demographic variables shown in previous studies to explain variations in the likelihood of home ownership for blacks and whites. The social and demographic variables included race, age, marital status, number of children, educa- tional attainment, employment status, and nativity. Results Race, Region, Nativity, and Home Ownership in the United States The findings revealed that respondents earned nearly $80,000 in total household income in 2008, while respondents reported total house- hold income in 2013 of about $76,500. In each year white respondents earned more than black respondents, Southern whites earned more than Southern blacks, and foreign-born blacks in the South earned more than native-born blacks in the South. In 2008 white respondents earned over $83,000 in total household income, and black respondents earned just under $54,000. Black respondents earned about 64 cents in total house- hold income for every dollar white respondents earned in total household income during the same year. Five years later, white respondents earned about $80,000 in total household income, and blacks earned $50,000 in total household income. In 2013, black households earned 63 cents in total household income for every dollar white households earned in total household income during the same year. Whites living in the South reported total household income in 2008 that was on average valued at $80,806.14. Blacks living in the South, on the other hand, reported total household income in 2008 that was only $51,545.23, on average. Blacks in the South had 64 cents in total house- hold income for every dollar whites in the South had in total household income. By 2013 white households in the South reported total household incomes of only $76,804.78, compared to $48,143.14 for black house- holds in the South during the same year. The black/white ratio of total household income was .63. Foreign-born blacks in the South reported higher total household income than native-born blacks in the South in 2008 and 2013. In 2008 the average total household income for foreign-born blacks was $66,189.24, and the average total household income for native-born blacks was $50,354.56. The native-born/foreign born ratio on total house- hold income for blacks in the South was .76 in 2008. In 2013 foreign-born blacks in the South reported total household income of nearly $60,000,
