Southern blacks did a bit better Southern blacks earned 70 cents for every dollar white Southerners earned in wage and salary income. The ratio between foreign-born blacks in the South and native-born blacks in the South was .69 in 2008. By 2013 the data revealed that blacks earned just over $23,000 in wage and salary income compared to whites who earned, on average, almost $34,000. The black/white ratio was .69. South- ern whites earned, on average, about $10,000 more than Southern blacks earned in terms of wage and salary income in 2013. The black/white ratio was .68. The gap between foreign-born and native-born blacks in the South on wage and salary income was .63 in 2013. Blacks fared worse than their white counterparts on wage and salary income between 2008 and 2013. Blacks in the South reported business and farm incomes of $1,063 in 2008 compared to $3,275.45 for whites in the South. Native-born blacks in the South earned almost $1,000 in business and farm income, and foreign-born blacks in the South earned over $2,000. Five years later, blacks reported less than $800 of business income compared to more than $2,700 for whites. Blacks earned 29 cents for every dollar whites earned in business and farm income. Blacks in the South reported $752.63 in busi- ness and farm income, while whites in the same region reported business and farm income of $2,419.73. Blacks in the South earned 33 cents for every dollar whites earned in business and farm income in 2013. Native- born blacks living in the South earned 55 cents for every dollar foreign- born blacks in the South earned in business and farm income. Native-born blacks in the South reported $706.78, and foreign-born blacks in the South earned almost $1,300 in business and farm income. Blacks received less, on average, in Social Security income than whites, while native-born blacks in the South earned more in Social Security income than foreign-born blacks in the South in 2008. Blacks earned $2,776.27 in 2008 in Social Security income compared to more than $4,000 for whites during the same year. Blacks received 69 cents for every dollar whites received in Social Security income. Blacks in the South earned only $2,679.36 in Social Security income, while comparable whites in the South earned $4,116.51 in Social Security income.
