Native-born blacks in the South received $2,787.19 in Social Security income in 2008, and foreign-born blacks in the South received only $1,337.84. By 2013, the black/white ratio increased to .72. Blacks reported receiving $3,274 in Social Security income compared to $4,576 for whites during the same year. Blacks in the South fared better relative to whites in 2013 than in 2008. Southern blacks received about $3,200 in Social Security income in 2013 compared to $4,694 for whites living in the South. Foreign-born blacks in the South received less in Social Security income in 2013 than native-born blacks in the South. Native-born blacks in the South received $3,326 in Social Secu- rity income compared to $1,829 for foreign-blacks in the South in 2013. The greatest disparities were observed in interest, dividend, and rental income between each group considered. In 2008, blacks earned 13 cents for every dollar whites earned in interest, dividend, and rental income. Blacks reported about $627, while whites reported almost $4,800. Blacks in the South earned only 11 cents for every dollar whites in the South earned in interest, dividend, and rental income. Blacks in the South received a little less than $500 in interest, dividend, and rental income, and whites in the South reported interest, dividend, and rental income of $4,630.64. Native-born blacks living in the South earned, on average, about as much as foreign-born blacks in interest, dividend, and rental income in 2008. Native-born blacks in the South earned $491.20 compared to $460.93 for foreign-born blacks in the South. The observed disparities in interest, dividend, and rental income decreased over the five-year period under study. In 2013 blacks reported interest, dividend, and rental income of $598.25 compared to $3,805.34 for whites. Southern blacks earned about 13 cents in interest, dividend, and rental income for every dollar Southern whites earned during the same year. Southern blacks earned about $500 compared to nearly $3,800 for Southern whites. Native-born blacks in the South reported interest, dividend, and rental income of $488.73 compared to $686.83 for foreign- born blacks in the South in 2013. Home ownership declined between 2008 and 2013 for native-born and foreign-born blacks and whites. In 2008, about 59 percent of native-born blacks in the South owned homes compared to 55.4 percent in 2013. About 80 percent of native-born whites in the South owned homes in 2008, and 78 percent owned homes in 2013. Nearly 63 percent of foreign- born blacks in the South owned homes in 2008, and less than 52 percent of foreign-born blacks in the South owned homes in 2013. Almost 70 per- cent of foreign-born whites in the South owned homes in 2008, but only 65 percent of foreign-born whites in the South owned homes by 2013.
